How to Switch to a Simple Tracking Pattern Using DNS Settings

2019.6.19 Version

Summary

This manual is meant for advertisers who are either switching from the old cookie-based image pixel tracking method to an ITP-safe tracking format as countermeasure against the added ITP feature from Safari 11 onwards, or who are setting up the DNS-based simple tracking pattern from the very beginning.

Compared to all the methods so far setting up the DNS-based tracking pattern not only improves the tracking accuracy but also allows the implementation of a very simple tracking format.

※In cases where it is not possible to adjust the DNS settings, please refer to the "New Tracking Method" manual based on the A8 JS tag.

The Switching Flow

The switching procedures can be divided into the following 4 steps:

  1. Adding DNS settings
  2. Test Tag Implementation (including tracking tests)
  3. Implementing the real tag (including tracking tests)
  4. Finish! (receiving the "ITP safe" icon)

1.Adding DNS Settings

Please set up a new subdomain under the domain where you implement our conversion tag and configure it as a cname record.

There are no specifications regarding the subdomain name, however please follow the examples below.

DNS Settings (adding a cname record)

By assigning the following cname record below to a subdomain of any arbitrary name registered under the same domain as the conversion page it is possible to use our very simply tracking format.

trck.a8.net.

How to set up cname records depends on your domain management service, so please refer to their respective instructions.

Example

Conversion page domain is cv.yoursite.net

The newly issued subdomain is a8clk.cv.yoursite.net

Settings

Register new cname record with your domain management service.

Setting example: a8clk.cv CNAME trck.a8.net.

2. Test Tag Implementation (including tracking tests)

Test Tag Sample

<span id="a8sales"></span>
<script src="//statics.a8.net/a8sales/a8sales.js"></script>
<script>
a8sales({
  "pid": "s00000000062001",
  "order_number": "order",
  "currency": "JPY",
  "items": [
    {
      "code": "item1",
      "price": 200,
      "quantity": 2
    },
  ],
   "total_price": 400
});
</script>

About the setup of the above tag code please refer to the respective section inside the JS Tag Implementation Guide.

However, thanks to this DNS-based implementation method there is no need for the Landing Page JS Tag inside the tracking code.

Caution:
・When implementing the test tag, please use the special test programID [PGID: s00000000062001].
・If the program is already launched on A8.net, then please be sure to keep the existing old tag and implement the new code additionally.

Tag Implementation To Tracking Test Flow

  1. Implementing the test tag
  2. Retrieving Test URL using the [A8 Test Tool]
  3. Using the test URL to perform a tracking test (test signup)
  4. Confirming the tracking test result inside the [A8 Test Tool]
  5. Tracking test successful message

After the above message our customer support will perform another test to confirm the correct implementation of the test tag.

3. Implementing The Real Tag

  1. After confirming the test tag implementation and performing our tracking tests, we will report the results back to you. If there have been no issues, then we will send you instructions to switch to the real tag and at the same time delete the existing old tag.

  2. Replacing test PGID with real PGID, removing existing image pixel (for running programs)

  3. Performing and reporting back about another 2x tracking tests by A8.net customer support

Despite the previous testing with the special test PGID our customer support is performing additional tracking tests also with the real PGID in order to verify a reliable implementation.

4. Finish! (receiving the "ITP-safe" icon)

After confirming the correct test result tracking your program is receiving the ITP safe icon.

For running programs the switching procedure is over now, for onboarding programs the settings up until here conclude all necessary technical setups.
